SACRAMENTO RIVER RAIL TRAIL

For many years, there has been a vision to extend the Sacramento River Trail north to the nearby recreational areas around Shasta Lake. This vision is coming to reality with a partnership between two federal agencies (the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Bureau of Reclamation), the state's Department of Forestry (CDF), Shasta County, and the McConnell Foundation. Utilizing an abandoned rail bed that follows the river through federal lands, BLM has taken a small $100,000 grant and, working with the CDF crews, has opened seven of the trail's nine miles to mountain biking and hiking. The remaining two miles of trail will be completed with a three-way partnership between the City of Redding, the Bureau of Reclamation and BLM to make the final link from the Rail Trail to the Sacramento River Trail.
